Dora Maar au Chat (Dora Maar with Cat) is a 1941 painting by Pablo Picasso. It depicts Dora Maar, the painter's Croatian mistress, seated on a chair with a small cat perched on her shoulders. This painting is world-famous and is now one of the world's most expensive paintings.
Dora Maar au Chat came up for sale in an auction of Impressionist/Modern works held at Sotheby's on May 3, 2006 in New York and making it the second-highest price ever paid for a painting at auction. An anonymous Russian bidder present at the New York auction won the work with a final bid of US$95,216,000

Golden Rectangle
Morphological Echo (1934-36) was painted between 1934 and 1936 and measures 64 x 54 cm. It depicts a seemingly minimal architectural setting with several surrealist images in its finer details. In the distance is a wall housing a bell resembling the figure of a woman in bundled skirts. In the distance towards the center is a strangely eroded rock form.

The Ascension of Christ by Salvador Dali

Dali said that his inspiration for The Ascension of Christ came from a "cosmic dream" that he had in 1950, some eight years before the painting was completed. In the dream, which was in vivid color, he saw the nucleus of an atom, which we see in the background of the painting.

The Abel Prize: Drawing parallels in geometry
Mikhail Gromov has been awarded the Abel Prize for his work making sense of the range of geometries that appeared in the 19th century and he is a worthy successor to the likes of Euclid, Riemann and Gauss, Bolyai and Lobachevsky.

Gromov: Russian-French mathematician receives the Abel Prize
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has decided to award the Abel Prize for 2009 to the Russian-French mathematician Mikhail Leonidovich Gromov (65) for "his revolutionary contributions to geometry".
